EWB Nashville is going to be busy Saturday, April 7, 2012 from 9am-12pm. We’re going to be working with the Cumberland River Compact building a rain garden, and we’d love for you to join us! We will be starting at 4648 Dowdy Drive, Antioch, moving on to 5139 Mount View Road, Antioch, and if there is time, moving on to 191 Townes Drive, Nashville. View a map of locations and get directions.

A rain garden is a small, bowl shaped garden (6″ deep) planted with flowers and ornamental grasses. A rain garden captures rain close to where is falls and gives the water an opportunity to sink into the ground. This replenishes ground water so small streams have water during the summer. It also prevents that rain water from carrying pollution into the small neighborhood streams. Rain gardens can also help reduce flooding farther downstream.

What to know

If you have any shovels, wheelbarrows, rakes, and gloves available, please bring them!

Bring a refillable water container (water bottle, WWII canteen, whatever, just something for you to drink out of)

Please wear closed-toed shoes

Don’t forget to wear sunscreen!

Water to refill your container & snacks provided

We hope to see you there!

We are evaluating projects and communities to work with. We have looked at open projects with EWB-USA and through our own membership connections. Chapelton, Jamaica is the only current project/community still being considered. The project is a water supply/pressure issue that the community is having due to being at the end of the water supply chain and due to the water supply being inconsistent in operations. Several fresh water springs exist in the community and we would design and install a method for the community to utilize its own water source without having to rely on an inconsistent system. We are in the process of deciding whether to submit the paperwork to EWB-USA for the Chapelton project. This project was brought to us by the Fergus Simpson Foundation (FSF), whose purpose is to provide Chapelton with economic, education, and leadership development. The FSF would serve as the conduit for communicating and connecting with the Chapelton community. More information about the FSF can be found at www.fsfjamaica.org.
